Science NSB - Word Splash on "Gas"

We had done a Word Splash on "Gas" in class today.
We came up with sentences to link up the various concepts in the word splash in the right context (e.g. in a specific experiment)
I've attached below a sample of what we had done in class today.

Homework
  • Do continue to come up with more words in the word splash & more sentences, linking the concepts together, on your own.
  • Do not merely just combine the concepts & phrase them into a sentence (like e.g. Gas is everywhere and can be compressed.)
  • Consider the right apparatus (e.g. syringe, container, cup, beaker, measuring cylinder) that you can use together with the concepts.
  • Consider the use of "Gas Particles" to deeper explain any of the concepts in the word splash.

Science Activity 5 & NSB

Complete Activity 5 page 1-5.
This is due on Wednesday, 15 Apr.

4 Steps in answering Open-Ended Questions on page 3 to 5.

  1. Read the question and highlight the key words.
  2. Link question to the topic / concept that you have learnt. Write down the topic / concept in point form at the side of the question.
  3. Construct your answer. (Bear in mind the importance of framing your answer with specific key words and language)
  4. Review your answer. (Read the question answer and check that your answer has fully covered the main points.)
Do refer to the summary below on today's lesson to help you answer the open-ended questions.

------------------------------------------------
We have discussed quite a lot today on the following 2 experiments & you should have written down the observation & explanation for them in your NSB:

  1. The experiment carried out last Thursday at the Science Lab (Inverting the plastic cup with tissue paper inside)
  2. The carnation milk can with only 1 poked hole to allow water to flow out.
Here's the concept & explanation consolidated in the above experiments:

1.
  • As the plastic cup with tissue paper is inverted & pushed into the tub of water, air occupy the space inside the cup. The water in the tub cannot enter the cup so the water level in the cup remains at the bottom & did not rise up.
  • When a hole is made at the base of the plastic cup, air occupying the space inside the cup can now escape from the hole. The water in the tub can then enter the cup to take up the space previously occupied by the air. So, the water level in the cup rises slowly and bubbles were seen at the hole, suggesting that the air had escaped.

2.
  • It was difficult for the milk in the can to flow out from the 1 hole because air occupy space inside the can. Air cannot escape from the 1 hole at the same time when we want to pour the milk out from the hole.
  • When another hole was made at the opposite side of the lid, air occupying the space inside the can can now escape from the 2nd hole, so the milk can flow out from the 1st hole easily.

  • Do Corrections for pg 109 to 112.
  • Do pg 113 to 115 only (Do Not do pg 116 yet)

Recap the 4 steps to drawing angles:
  1. On the given line, identify & mark out the "C". This is where the Centre of the base line / zero line in your protractor should lies.
  2. Place the base line / zero line of your protractor on the given line with the Centre exactly on "C"
  3. Measure the angle with the inner or outer scale. Mark with a "dot" on your paper at the edge of the protractor after reading off the angle.
  4. Draw a line through the "dot" to the Centre "C".

Parents Signature & Corrections for Science Spelling in NSB

  1. Corrections for last week's spelling (if any)
  2. Parents' Signature
  3. Remember to bring NSB tomorrow for this week's spelling
Recap on today's experiment's observation that you've written in your NSB
  • Aim: To test whether air occupy space
  • First Activity
  • Procedures: Plastic cup with tissue paper attached at the bottom of the cup. Plastic cup was inverted and then pushed into the tub of blue-coloured water. (Ensure the whole plastic cup is below the water surface in the tub.
  • Observation: Only 5 groups observed that their tissue paper in the cup remains dry.
  • Second Activity
  • Procedures: A hole was made at the based of the cup & the same experiment was repeated.
  • Observation: All the groups were able to see the water level in the cup slowly rising. Bubbles were also seen inside the cup as the water level rises.
Unusual observation
  • When water will filled up in the plastic cup & it was inverted inside the tub of water, slowly move the inverted cup up to the surface of the water in the tub. It was observed that the water in the cup did not flow out at all.
Pupils,
I encouraged you to think deeper about today's observations. Why were these observations made? What can you conclude able the water and the air? We will discuss more on Monday.
